Dear Parent/Carer
As we approach the end of the Autumn Term, I would like, as ever, to thank you for your ongoing support for the school. It has been a busy but extremely satisfying term. The Estyn report has now been published following their visit in September. Amongst the many positive reflections the report contains, certain lines really stand out in summing up what we want to be about; 'Olchfa School provides a nurturing and inclusive environment underpinned by strong relationships between staff and pupils' and where 'The positive working relationships between staff and pupils at Olchfa School are a notable feature'. Estyn will also publish two case studies, including one on our sense of identity and cynefin. What is most pleasing with all these comments is that they reflect the strength of partnerships at every level and the ways in which we perform as individuals and together. None of that could be achieved without your ongoing support – diolch yn fawr for that.
The end of term will see some of the usual celebrations, with our Christmas dinner and Christmas Jumper Day both scheduled for Wednesday, December 17th. The previous night, Tuesday 16th, will see the newly named Swansea Minster host our Carol Concert. This is always a hugely popular and well-supported event which showcases the wonderful array of talent of young people display, whether it be in song, recital or playing instruments. I hope you are able to join us for what for many, my family included, marks the start of the festive period.
May I wish you all a joyous and restful Christmas and New Year wherever, however and with whomever you choose to spend it. Nadolig Llawen and Blwyddyn Newydd Dda.
Mr. Julian Kennedy, Headteacher

Specialist Teaching Facility
|
|
Our new Specialist Teaching Facility has launched this term led by Mr. D, James and already it is making a huge impact. With just three pupils, the provision has had an incredibly positive start; the pupils have settled in brilliantly, quickly finding their feet and becoming confident members of our school community.
They are enthusiastically exploring the school, building strong and respectful relationships with staff and peers, and showing just how ready they are to learn in a safe and supportive environment. In their 'Out of this World' topic, pupils have amazed us with their creativity – creating rich storyworlds layered with interesting characters and funny plotlines, designing their own planets, and thoughtfully setting the rights and values for each one.
We are incredibly proud of how far they have come already and excited to see what they achieve next.

Bar Mock Trial - Year 13 Law
A group of Year 13 Law pupils took part in their first ever Bar Mock Trial competition at Cardiff Crown Court, where they achieved an impressive third place. This is an extremely prestigious and highly competitive national event, and the pupils performed exceptionally well across all three rounds, demonstrating outstanding preparation, professionalism and resilience.
In the lead-up to the competition, a range of legal professionals visited the school to support the team’s development, and were sponsored by Redkite Solicitors. The experience provided pupils with invaluable insight into the criminal justice system and significantly enhanced their legal advocacy skills.

Year 11 RS Pupils Visit Sketty Mosque
The Year 10 RS class, as part of their study of Islam, visited Sketty Mosque. The visit strengthened pupils’ understanding of Muslim identity as well as the architectural features of mosques. Importantly, it also contributed to developing pupils’ sense of cynefin by deepening their appreciation of the diverse faith communities that shape their local area. This was an invaluable opportunity for pupils to connect classroom learning with real-world experience.
Year 9 iExplore Environmental Science
This term, our iExplore Environmental Science class took their learning beyond the classroom as they explored biodiversity in Clyne Woods. Across two fieldwork sessions, students investigated local ecosystems first-hand, applying their knowledge in a real-world context and developing valuable scientific skills. The sessions were run by Dawn Thomas from Nature Days alongside Mrs Husband, ensuring pupils received high-quality, well-structured guidance throughout. We are grateful to the Gower Society for fully funding this opportunity
Humanities Club - Autumn Term
Humanities Club has once again been well attended this term, with pupils enthusiastically taking part in a wide range of activities designed to spark curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world around them. They have explored religious festivals such as Diwali, discovering the stories, symbols and traditions that shape celebrations across different cultures. Pupils also delved into the fascinating history of paper aeroplanes before testing their own designs, combining creativity with a touch of friendly competition. To develop their understanding of law and criminality, they took part in interactive games—including Werewolf—which encouraged teamwork, critical thinking and debate. More recently, pupils applied their geographical knowledge by building and testing their own earthquake-proof structures, learning how engineering and hazard planning work together to keep communities safe. It has been a lively and engaging term, and we look forward to welcoming even more pupils next term.
