Initial Teacher Education

Olchfa School is a Network Lead Partner School within The Athrofa Professional Learning Partnership (APLP). We work together with Yr Athrofa to produce, deliver and support professional learning for initial teacher education.

Yr Arthofa was launched in 2018 and is designed to prepare the next generation of teachers in Wales. The programme combines the expertise of the school sector and all it’s practical, hands-on experience with the expertise of higher education (HE) to provide high quality training routes.

The network model has been developed to allow groups of partner schools to be led by a Lead school in order to co-deliver the programmes. Our partner schools include Bishop Gore School, Bishopston Comprehensive School, Gower College and Penyrheol Comprehensive School. This network experience means that students will be placed in at least 2 different schools, meaning experiences become more valuable and varied.

The purpose of the partnership is to:

  • Develop and provide relevant and meaningful professional learning opportunities for educational professionals which meets the professional standard required to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS);

  • Model a genuinely collaborative approach to ITE and professional learning in Wales;

  • Ensure that student teachers are ready to deliver the New Curriculum for Wales;

  • Develop evidence based practitioners who have opportunities and experiences that support critical thinking and shared reflection.
